Bits & Bites

Smoothie and juice joint dtox plans to open its third overall location in the coming weeks at the corner of Virginia Avenue and North Highland Avenue in Virginia Highland.  Dtox will open in the former Judith Bright space [they previously expanded and relocated to a space nearby], between Taco Cowboy and Callie's Hot Little Biscuit.  Dtox currently operates locations in Buckhead Court in Buckhead and at Westside Provisions District on the Westside.
Struggling aspirational fashion retailer Calypso St. Barth is actively closing its store at the Westside Provisions District.  The store, which opened in 2012, is offering discounts of as much as 50% off the lowest ticketed price of all in-stock merchandise.  The chain's Avalon store, which opened in late 2014, closed previously.  Calypso St. Barth has reportedly been in trouble for over a year, with its troubles coming to a head in November when about a half-dozen vendors filed an involuntary Chapter 7 petition against the private equity-owned chain, claiming the chain hasn’t paid some of its bills in a year, according to the New York Post.  Despite the closing sale, there is an active page on the Calypso website seeking to hire a "full time sales lead."

BURN Studios plans to open its second overall location Monday January 8th at Powers Ferry Square in Buckhead.  Former Flywheel instructor Jeremy Levison opened the first BURN at Brookleigh Marketplace in Brookhaven in the fall of 2015.  As ToNeTo Atlanta was first to report in August, BURN will be joined by a new HomeGoods in the center next year.

Kajun Crab, offering pho and seafood, will celebrate its grand opening on Buford Highway in Chamblee Saturday December 16. The new eatery opens alongside Food Terminal in the City Farmers Market shopping center.

Boutique dog & cat food retailer Hollywood Feed will be joining the upcoming 365 by Whole Foods Market in Paces Ferry Plaza in Buckhead next year.  Hollywood Feed will open in a nearly 4,800 square foot space on the Ace Hardware end of the center.   The Memphis, Tennessee-based retailer currently has nine locations throughout metro Atlanta making the Peach State the company's third largest market behind Texas (26 stores) and Tennessee (11 stores).  The Paces Ferry Plaza location will be the company's tenth in metro Atlanta with sources saying the retailer "is not done" scouting for additional metro locations.  At least one other store in metro Atlanta was confirmed when ToNeTo Atlanta reported earlier this year that Hollywood Feed will be opening alongside 365 by Whole Foods Market at the new North Decatur Square shopping center near Decatur.

Restaurant industry veteran Matthew DeBusk is opening his own concept, Austin's Burritos.  Expected to open "soon" in Dacula, the 1,800 square foot burrito joint will be located in the Publix-anchored Hamilton Mill Village shopping center on Hamilton Mill Parkway, just off I-85.  According to DeBusk's LinkedIn profile, he is a "restaurant dude, [and] maker of outstanding guacamole."  DeBusk's restaurant experience spans more than ten years and includes work at Atlanta-based Great Wraps as well as Moe's Southwest Grill and Moe's owner, FOCUS Brands.  While ToNeTo Atlanta has thus far been unable to speak with DeBusk about his plans for Austin's, his experience in franchising and franchise sales would seem to suggest he hopes to grow Austin's beyond Dacula.

Arby's plans to open two new Atlanta area locations in the coming days.  A new Arby's will open on Scenic Highway in Snellville on Saturday December 16 followed by another in Johns Creek, currently planned to open next Tuesday, December 19.  As ToNeTo Atlanta first reported in September and October respectively, the Snellville location was built in an undeveloped outparcel of the Scenic Promenade while the Johns Creek Arby's opened in place of a short-lived Pollo Tropical restaurant on State Bridge Road.

New Balance and a nail salon are reportedly the two tenants coming to the new development at the corner of Clairmont and North Druid Hills Roads on the site of the former Exxon gas station and convenience store.  When ToNeTo Atlanta reported in March on property owner Trilogy Group's plans to develop the site, there was a good deal of feedback and interest in the property with at least two readers hoping for a Bojangles'.  While a Bojangles' is not happening, work is FINALLY underway on the highly anticipated Bojangles' in Chamblee.  New Balance seems like an odd choice, as they are often found in anchored centers or  mixed-use developments, but perhaps they are banking on big Emory student business.

Austin, Texas-based Tex-Mex restaurant Chuy's will open their fourth Atlanta area location next Tuesday, December 19th at the new Liberty Park Village project on Old Milton Parkway near Avalon in Alpharetta.  Current Atlanta area locations of Chuy's include those Dunwoody, Kennesaw and Akers Mill near Cumberland Mall.

Target plans to acquire grocery delivery service Shipt, a rival of Instacart, for $550 million in cash.
